GUIDE
How to make a weekly zmanim flyer for your shul
A weekly zmanim flyer is often the most-read thing a shul sends out. People check it on Friday afternoon for candle lighting, on Shabbos for davening times and on Motzei Shabbos for when Shabbos ends. Here is what to put on it, and how to keep it accurate and easy to read every week.
What to include
Every week
- Parsha and dates: the parsha name, the English date and the Hebrew date. Note special Shabbosos such as Shabbos Mevorchim or the four parshiyos.
- Candle lighting: the most important time on the flyer. Make it the largest.
- Friday mincha and sunset (shkiah).
- Shabbos morning: shacharis, and sof zman krias shema. Many shuls list both the Magen Avraham and the Gra times.
- Shabbos afternoon: mincha, shalosh seudos and any shiurim.
- Shabbos ends: maariv and the time for havdalah. Say which opinion you use, for example “Shabbos ends” and a separate “Rabbeinu Tam” time.
- Weekday davening: shacharis and mincha/maariv for the coming week, especially when the times shift with sunset.
Often included
- A photo of the week or a short community update
- Kiddush and shalosh seudos sponsors, mazel tovs and yahrzeits
- A sponsor ad from a local business, which can help cover costs
- Rosh Chodesh, fast days and Yom Tov times when they fall that week
Getting the times right
- Agree on the settings with your rav once: the exact location of the shul, how many minutes before sunset you light candles, and which opinions you follow for the end of Shabbos and for sof zman krias shema.
- Use one reliable source every week, such as Hebcal, MyZmanim or your community’s printed luach. Switching between sources is the most common cause of a time being off by a minute or two.
- Check the weeks when clocks change. The Shabbos right after daylight saving time starts or ends is when copied-over times are most likely to be wrong.
- Have a second person glance at it before it goes out, or compare it against a second source.
If two sources disagree, it is usually a settings difference, not a mistake. Our guide on why zmanim times differ explains the common reasons.
Design tips
- Design for phones first. Most people see the flyer on WhatsApp or in email. A portrait image around 1080 × 1350 pixels fills a phone screen well.
- Keep the layout fixed. Times in the same place every week means people find them in a second.
- Use large, clear numbers for candle lighting and Shabbos ends. Avoid thin, decorative fonts for times.
- Leave fixed spots for the photo and the sponsor ad, so changing them never breaks the layout.
- Save a JPEG for sharing and a PDF if you print copies for the shul lobby.
- Check the Hebrew. If the flyer is bilingual, make sure Hebrew text displays right to left and the nikud or fonts survive exporting.
A simple weekly checklist
- Update the parsha and both dates
- Update every time from your one source, using your shul’s settings
- Swap in this week’s photo and sponsor ad
- Update announcements, sponsors and simchas
- Have someone check candle lighting and Shabbos ends
- Export as JPEG (and PDF if printing) and send it out, ideally by Wednesday or Thursday
